ON BECOMING A PRODUCER
by Scott Thompson
In 1996 I founded Austin Musical Theatre, a non-profit, professional Equity musical theatre company in Austin, Texas. During my eight year tenure as Producing Artistic Director of AMT the company produced twenty-three main stage productions, two fully staged concerts, three professionally produced full length children’s musicals and twenty-two camps and special events for children. In addition to its professional performing company, AMT developed a full time Performing Arts Academy for both young people and adults. Through the Academy, AMT proudly launched the careers of dozens of professional actors with alumni now appearing on Broadway, and in television and films.
For fifteen years prior to the creation of Austin Musical Theatre, I worked in virtually every aspect of theatre. Beginning as an Equity performer regionally and in National Tours, I then moved on to directing and choreographing for professional regional theatres nationwide. For four seasons I served as Artistic Director for the Southern Arizona Light Opera Company in Tucson, Arizona, effectively doubling the season ticket subscription base and bringing the company its highest artistic accolades to date. The obvious next step was to become a producer myself, so I founded Austin Musical Theatre out of an intense need to create theatre in an environment where the ultimate goal was the achievement of the highest possible artistic standard. Success for the company came quickly. Building to a full time staff of fourteen, along side brilliant designers, musicians, technicians and over five hundred performers, almost two hundred of them being high level Broadway Equity guest artists, AMT garnered a total of thirty-seven awards for excellence from the Austin Critics Association.
After nearly a decade in Austin, it was time to move on to new goals, taking with me the vast experience gained from both Austin Musical Theatre and my twenty years as a director, choreographer and producer. I look forward to the exciting opportunities that lie ahead, always with the aim of challenging myself artistically to raise the bar in each new situation.
